Instinctual Variants

Underneath your type run three survival instincts everyone carries: self-preservation, social, and sexual (one-to-one). One dominates, one supports, one is a blind spot โ€” and the dominant instinct bends your type into one of three distinct subtypes. That's why two people of the same type can look wildly different: a self-pres Seven hoards cozy opportunities while a social Seven gives its appetite away to the group.

The six stackings

Your top two instincts form your stacking (dominant/secondary); the third is the blind spot โ€” the domain you under-attend until it bites. Sp/so and so/sp differ more than they sound: order matters.

The 27 subtypes

Each type comes in three flavors โ€” and one of the three is the countertype: the version that runs against the type's usual passion, and the one most often mistyped. Open your type:

Instincts are a mistyping engine

Most stubborn mistypings are countertypes: the counterphobic sx6 reads as an 8, the modest sp3 as a 1 or 6, the fiery sx4 as an 8, the group-hearted so8 as a 2, the busy so9 as a 3, the romantic sx5 as a 4. If your test result never quite fit, check the countertype of your runner-up โ€” then the mislabelings guide for the clinical look-alikes.

Instincts and couples: instinct matching often predicts day-to-day compatibility better than type does โ€” shared dominant instincts mean shared priorities. The pairings page now takes instincts into account.
